ABSTRACT

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) remains underrecognized and frequently misdiagnosed in adult populations. In this study, we examined 83 patients who had previously been evaluated by other psychiatrists but were not diagnosed with ADHD or were given alternative diagnoses. Our findings indicate that misdiagnosis is often rooted in the heterogeneity of symptoms, overlap with other psychiatric conditions, and the presence of comorbid disorders. In addition to psychopathological challenges, several systemic issues were identified, including low awareness and knowledge of adult ADHD, lack of accessible and adapted diagnostic guidelines and tools, diagnostic biases influenced by the structure and treatment goals of psychiatric services, and the absence of continuity between child/adolescent and adult mental health systems. Addressing these barriers requires a comprehensive approach involving improved clinician training, development of diagnostic resources tailored for adults, and stronger integration across mental health services.
